Professor of archaeology, expert on the occult, and, how does one say it? Obtainer of votes.

Guelph Movie Club Episode 5: Raiders of the Lost Ark is screening Thursday, May 30 at 6:45 p.m.—note the change in start time.

But we will have other business that evening, you and I, because I'll also be announcing the movie for Episode 6 in June. But before I can do that, I’ll need your help to decide which movie we’ll be showing. The shortlist has been enumerated and I’m pleased to share it for your voting pleasure:
That’s a list of heavy hitters – not a bad one in the bunch.

You can vote for which movie you'd like to see in June by taking this GMC poll:

Voting ends Thursday, May 16, at midnight.

Don’t forget Indiana Jones, Thursday, May 30, 6:45 p.m. Till then, see you at the movies.

  2. Dah Dunh. Dah Dunh. Dunh Dunh Dunh Dunh Dunh Dunh.

(Just keep that going in your head)

Jaws, my friends. It's the grand daddy of summer blockbusters. It's scary, it's funny, and it holds up. It's got a giant shark.

It's also your only choice for Guelph Movie Club Episode 6. Richard Dreyfus, Roy Schneider, and Robert Shaw are hunting a great white. I'm hunting votes.

Think you can do better with one of the other movies? You're going to need a bigger boat.

  3. Two words: Jimmy Stewart

There is really nothing necessary to sway you to make the best choice here. Choose Vertigo.

Jimmy Stewart is on the of the all time greatest male actors, named third in fact by the AFI, behind Humphrey Bogart and Cary Grant. Now sure, you could choose a Bogey film and see the number one male actor according to AFI, but Jimmy was robbed and you need to see why.

Not only does Jimmy Stewart have more credits to his name, he's also got more characters. Sure he's often known as the boy scout, the stammering gangly guy who can do no wrong, but look a bit further and you will find a villain, an obsessive pilot, a paranoid photographer, a cowboy, and in Vertigo, an anxious detective with lots of self-doubt.

And what can Bogey play? A hard-boiled gangster in those first 20 or so films, a hard-boiled detective in those few films, and a hard-boiled riverboat captain, and in the contending film, a hard-boiled bar owner. We get it Bogey, you are man.

Watch Jimmy Stewart exemplify a more gentle, more well-rounded man in Vertigo, or in any of his films. In fact, let's just ditch this voting thing and make it the Guelph Jimmy Stewart Movie Club!

  4. How can you possibly pick from this selection? 5 landmark films from completely different points on the spectrum.

Going against the grain and choosing not to vote for one of my favourite movies of all time, Jaws, I'm going to put my vote in for To Kill a Mockingbird. Why? Because of how simple a story it is.

All of these movies are hailed masterpieces, but To Kill a Mockingbird has a story and a lesson in it that are simple enough to appeal to all ages. It's a movie from a time when cinema didn't mean over-the-top action, controversial shock topics, or any kind of twist-endings to elaborate mysteries.

It's just a good warm movie with one of the best role model characters (Atticus Finch is the man!) in the history of cinema or literature.

Now that I think about it, it's also one of the most successful adaptations of an acclaimed novel to the big screen. How many times has THAT happened?

    1. Well that one time Spielberg made that one movie out of the Peter Benchley novel... which one was that? Oh yeah, Jaws.

  5. I don't see Zoolander on that list, ANYWHERE.
